The Senate of Tlaxcallan, debating at Tizatlan

"Xicotencatl the Young defends his case before his rival Maxixcatzin and a senate of his peers: War, war with the invaders who threaten the sovereignty of our borders!"
This piece is part of a series of illustrations that were commissioned by the archaeological youtuber Stefan Milo for his video on the republican nature of the pre-Hispanic government of Tlaxcallan, which you can see in the following link:

Tlaxcallan was a Nahua political entity that resided in what is now the state of Tlaxcala, Mexico. Known primarily for its alliance with the Spanish and its pivotal role in the fall of the Mexica Empire, its peculiar form of government has begun to receive greater attention in light of careful analyzes of early sources and archaeological work carried out within the head of the old altépetl (in the current city of Tlaxcala).
It has been revealed, both in the text and on the site, a system of political participation that is considerably open and inclusive compared to its autocratic contemporaries, more in keeping with a representative democracy (a republic) than a monarchy, and a city of considerably uniform and egalitarian character, present in its architecture, its urban layout and its archaeological remains.
