Guaranga Auccak Pusarik Chankay Inca
My interpretation of an Inca guaranga chankay captain
According to some chronicles, individuals in the service of the Inca administration who achieved success and stood out in administration or war were considered "privileged Incas." Here, an orejón (Rinroyoq) is shown dressed in clothes of Chankay cultural affiliation, as a symbol of his origin (Central Coast of present-day Peru) The Inca checkered unku would show the rank reached within the Inca army. Likewise, the copper axe or the bronze chanpi (club) would be symbols closely linked to military command, probably rewards granted by the Incas when establishing alliances with the leaders of the character's area of origin.
This project was part of a collaboration with the artist Frank Abarca to illustrate two captains from our respective areas of study, in our style. I am very happy to have participated in this end-of-year project and I hope you all like it.
